Language Map
During the COVID-19 pandemic, a team of community-based organizations and academics found that the dissemination of crucial information about health and economic support did not take into account the diversity of languages of Indigenous Mesoamerican communities living in Oregon.
Invisible No More! offers maps that feature the languages of Indigenous Mesoamerican communities with the greatest precision following state–of–the-art research in Linguistics. These maps are meant as resources to ensure that services to Indigenous Mesoamerican communities be provided in a community’s specific language. Often language families are confused for specific languages resulting in inaccurate interpretation. We hope to contribute to more accurate interpretation.
How to Use the Map
Locate the map: The language map will display on the lower half of this web page. If there are issues loading, then you can experience it by clicking on this link. Your browser will then open in a new window and the map will be enlarged.
Explore the map: The map highlights the towns of origin in Guatemala and Mexico, as well as the towns and counties in Oregon where Mesoamerican communities live and contribute to. Use your mouse to click and drag the map to pan around and explore different areas. You can also use your mouse wheel, track pad, or the zoom buttons (usually + and – icons) to zoom in and out for detail.
Interact with map features: Look for clickable icons, markers, or colored areas on the map to open pop-ups with more information.
Use the legend: A box explaining what different colors, icons, or symbols on the map represent.
Toggle layers: Look for a layers button or menu (often represented by a stack of papers icon) to select or deselect certain layers and customize the displayed information.
Search for locations: Many embedded maps include a search bar where you can type in a place name to quickly navigate to that location on the map.
View basemaps: Look for a basemap selector (often represented by a grid or stack of tiles icon) that allows you to change the underlying map style.
